  • SSG Walter J. Meidl, 57, died Thursday, June 30, 2005 of cancer at his home in West St Paul.
      Funeral services were held Monday July 11 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with full military honors.
      Walter served his country proudly with enlistments in the Navy, National Guard and Army. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam War, and the Persian Gulf Conflict. He currently was assigned to the VA Hospital in St. Paul. Walters favorite pastime was fishing, which was on occasion known to include a favorite beverage or two. While Walter had no children of his own, they occupied a large place in his heart!
      Walter was born Sept 1, 1947 at Loretto Hospital in New Ulm to Walter H. and Rita (Schultz) Meidl.
      He attended Holy Trinity Grade School and Cathedral High School. After high school he enlisted in the Navy.
      Walter is survived by his parents, his brothers Michael of Austin, Mn, and Mark of Silver Creek GA; sisters Margorie (Steve) Grossmann of Courtland, Linda (Keith) Schroeder of Pine River, Mary Beth Goettsche of St. Cloud, Carol (Dennis) Knight of Silver Creek GA; Godparents Jerome and Lucella Schultz; numerous uncles and aunts; eight nephews, and 10 nieces; two great nieces and two great nephews; special friends from St Paul Jim and Melissa, and David and Lisa, who helped care for him during his illness.
      Walter was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Hugo and Mary (Saffert) Meidl and maternal grandparents Emil and Elizabeth (Staloch) Schultz.
